CEMETERY
IN MENNONITE COUNTRY

We buy bread
and corn,
find the cemetery.
The sun unbuttons
his pink shirt.
Among the dead
we make plans--
a record fare,
a diner.
Sarah,
1815-1877,
has a few words
with us:
Remember you're next.
Heading back
to the car,
we brush against
purple
and white
lilacs.
COME TO YOUR CENSUS
