A DAY WITH THE DOGS

 she stood at the rail

 poised and posed and pale

 while I attended

 conscious of my cheap shirt

"What happens if a dog catches the

           rabbit?" she asked

"They won't chase it anymore," I replied

"Then they become no good for racing?"

I shook my head and watched her turn

           back to the track

 she laughed when she won

 simple luck

 her number

 and touched my cheek briefly

"but I bet they still like to run," she said
