Letter from Death Row, San Quentin Prison | Poem

1 November 1999
"I had a friend in Nam who lost both his legs at age twenty-two. Because he was so young at the time he really went through some changes. Ten years later, a traffic accident took his left arm. Four years later he came down with MS and lost the use of his only remaining limb. He wrote me about seven months ago via a voice thingy on your computers. He told me how each loss brought him into a deeper, more beautiful, understanding of life. The losses were mourned...then life was redefined...and new passions arose. His love of life and understanding of it is deeper than anyone I have ever known."
