Butterfly | Poem

Butterfly

I can’t conceal this elephant
much longer
as the light from the carousel dims
by day
and halos circle smiles

…by night
the beast
is brought onto his knees
sipping spirit ecstasy

I tip toe round this labyrinth
of fantasy
hoping, wishing, praying
the grease not hit the flame
…tonight
not tonight
…let me
avoid the pain
the shame
to know
just where
I lost my name
I must
I slip outside my self
and enact this play called life
as the caterpillar weaves
a cocoon
in wistful hopes and dreams
of a butterfly
